to DO lists vs. to BE lists

Ever since I got married, I've been a fan of the to-do list. Since then, I've never been without one. Nowadays, I use my iPhone, but the lists have always had the same purpose--to get me from where I am today to where I want to be.

But where I want to be isn’t really a destination; it’s a state of being.

It's super easy for me to get caught up in the DO's of life, sometimes forgetting the more important BE's. Who am I? What do I value? Do my actions reflect what I value?

Gordon B. Hinckley once said that we should focus on nine particular "Be's" in order to live a fulfilled and happy life.

Be grateful ~ Because gratitude is the foundation of all happiness.

Be smart ~ Value education and learning in whatever form they take, in whatever phase of life you may be in.

Be clean ~ Take care of your body, so it can take care of you.

Be true ~ Be the sort of person people can count on. The sort of person people can trust.

Be prayerful ~ Whether you believe in a deity or not, I think being prayerful means to take time to recognize your value . . . that your role in this life could have a significant and lasting impact.

Be humble ~ Different from being grateful, being humble means you recognize that there is always more you can learn, ways you can improve.

Be positive ~ I've talked about this a lot about here. I believe positivity can wholly bless your lives. I don't really believe in focusing on the negative when there's always something (even an itsy bitsy tiny something) to be positive about.

Be still ~ I believe that the joy of life is found in the small moments--those moments we aren't always aware of unless we stop and breathe.

Be involved ~ This is a new one for me, but I'm trying. Let yourself be seen, be counted. Because that's how friendships are made and life is lived.

Of course I will always have my to-do lists. But I'm thinking that the more important list should be my to-BE's. I'm going to focus on being the kind of person I want to be, and let my to-do's help get me there.

Are there any Be's you'd add to this list?
p.s. I would so appreciate it if you would join my first ever blogfest! Linky's at the top of the page!

I love this, Ali! So often we focus on what we need to get done that we forget that we must BE first of all. :)

Ali, you are so right. It doesn't matter what's on the to do list if we arent't enjoying the ride and ourselves while we accomplish those tasks.

This is fabulous! Love it!

This is so awesome! I'm guilty of having a to-do list with no to-be list. I think BE ambitious is always a good one. ;)

Be awesome! Okay, that's a bit ambiguous.

Love your list!

I was just reminding a friend that we are human "BEings", not human "DOings". Of course, I am the one who needs reminding about that the most!

I'm trying to work on the being positive one and in tribute to that, I won't admit how hard that one is for me. ;)

Danyelle, Alex and Christine ~ I'm so glad you got it! I definitely get sucked into all the to DO's which leaves me with precious little time to BE who I need/want to be!

Madeline ~ I love BE AMBITIOUS!! We definitely need to be that!

LOL Shari ~ I'm down with BEing AWESOME! That's like striving to be your best at all you do. Not ambiguous at all!

Oh I love that Teri Anne!

And LT, that's fabulous positivity there! I think it's working already!

I'd add Be Kind, but I think yours basically cover that. :)

Nutschell ~ I'm so not surprised you would add Be Happy!

Krispy ~ Oh, Be Kind. Perfect.

Great post! I love all those "Be's". I might add Be Generous- with your time and love; and money if possible.

I love this list. It's like I've found an oasis in my busy "to-do" day.

Be Aware? As in, Be Aware of the world around you--especially the people. :)

Great list!

I love this list Ali. I myself could use a healthy dose of To Be instead of To Do. My greatest offender must be Be Still which leads to Be Present - pay attention to the present moment instead of thinking about the past and the future all the time.

Glad I came over, Ali. It's so easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities and never really relax. I'd add something I need to pay more attention to and that to 'be attuned to other people's feelings/moods.'

Inspiring post, ali!
Being involved is a hard one for me, but I'm working at it!

I love this idea! I'd add Be Creative, and be Observant to the list, which goes along with being aware and grateful.
