The main character, Desi is not very self-aware. At least not at first. During the course of the series she learns a lot about herself and the world she lives in--or rather, the worlds she lives in.

Desi is definitely this way, but in BECOME, she's forced to realize that she doesn't live in a tunnel--she's a part of life and life requires that we act. At first Desi's efforts to act are misguided and clunky. She doesn't know who she is or even where to start making changes in her life.
But as her awareness grows, so does her faith in the people around her--even if she's not willing to give herself the same courtesy.

I think people in pain are often not aware of much of anything outside of that pain. And Desi was/is a person very much in pain.

Self-awareness is a tricky thing. Some people don't focus on what's ahead, and some focus on what's so far back that they are blind to what is in front of them. Awesome start Ali and I look forward to reading more of your A-Z Challange!
