I have been blessed with the ability to ignore outward distractions. I have a harder time with the inner distractions. Emotional unrest and all that. Music helps relax me in that way so I can concentrate on writing. Great post, Christine!

Wow! You guys are freakin' awesome. It's so great to be a guest on Ali's blog and to be a ninja. Sorry to say, I've been a bit of a "closet" ninja lately, but I'm determined to come out of my shell and get to know you all better.

Distractions are a major pain, but inevitable, especially if you have small children in the house. My writing sessions are usually about five minutes at a time, because as soon as my butt hits the chair the kids think I need to be getting them something. Plus there are the baby smackdowns which happen on an hourly basis. I find my best writing is early morning, late afternoon, and basically any other time the kids are quiet or asleep. I also want to add that Bound was a great read and I'm so looking forward to Broken! And as a graphic geek, I adore the cover art! Well done!

Christine and Ali--I'm very much like you...I need the quiet and do most of my writing when the kids are in school; however, sometimes I can't have a too quiet, empty house to get going. On those days, I have to take my characters for a walk in the park or brood in a busy bookstore. Great post!

Jennifer ~ A friend of mine has to read sometimes up to 30 pages of her story before she gets into it. I hope you don't have to do that much!

Christine ~ Thank you! And I'm a lot like you ... as long as I write as close to every day as I can, the story stays with me. But I do like some music when I'm writing :)

For the most part, I'm able to block out outside noises and write just about anywhere. While the kids are watching PBS, while hubby's watching TV, sometimes even when hubby's talking to me (whoops!) I don't listen to music though. I love to sing so I tend to get too distracted with music to concentrate.

I was JUST talking about this subject with a local writerly pal - she is the same way with distractions. Where I can hold the "vibe" of the story in my head from start to finish. Thank goodness - because when I draft, I do it in 15-30 min increments. LOL!

I don't do well with distractions either and usually have music playing. Sometimes the TV is on as well. I guess some distractions are all right!
