I Didn't Do It

This post is part of Wednesday Words ~ Flash Fiction (100-250 words) about the above prompt. Let me know what you think! Also, check out Wednesday Words for links to other super shorts on this same prompt. :)

The new girl walked down the hallway, her head held high, the butt of her white jeans smeared in chocolate.

“What happened?” Samantha asked as we stared in horror at Melanie Something’s butt.

I shook my head. “I’ve no idea.” And for no good reason, I added, “I didn’t do it.”

“She’s never gonna live this down, ya know.”

“I know.”

Most of the girls looked mortified, but there were enough jerks to make the scene everyone’s nightmare. And when there was blood in the water, teenagers circled like sharks. It was human nature. Devour or be devoured.

Mrs. Coron stood outside her classroom talking to a student when the new girl walked past. Man, she had balls. I couldn’t see her face, but she wasn’t running and crying like I would have.

Clueing into the mob mentality in the hall, Mrs. Coron immediately understood the situation. She yanked Melanie into her room and shut the door. Denied their tasty snack, everyone returned to life as usual.

“See ya,” Samantha said, but I didn’t respond. I kept staring at the closed classroom door, an inappropriate grin stretching my lips.

No, I didn’t do it.

But the demon inside me did.
