The Benefit of Making Mistakes

While so many people have been enjoying (or suffering, depending on your perspective), I've been working my butt off, man!

I was scheduled to teach at a favorite conference of mine, Storymakers on my favorite subject, Save the Cat. But for some reason, I just could not get my act together. Either I had too much material, or too little. To make things worse, we were to record our classes (because the con went virtual, of course) so there wasn't any "give" and I had to be exactly on time. Forty minutes—BAM!

It took me weeks to get it right!

I'm sure it was a lack of forethought on my part. A lack of planning. I don't know what it was, but ahhh....It ate up weeks of my time. No joke!

BUT, let me tell you why it was awesome.

  • I thought I knew Save the Cat before—now, I know it even better.

  • I now have three new presentations I can give, and two of them are recorded, as well. Bonus!

  • I can appreciate my normal ol' busy days a lot more because at least I'm not busy like that on a regular basis!

It makes me think of a quote I use in Blood Moon (Minnie Kim Vampire Girl #4—coming soon!):

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.” --Buddha

I'll admit, that there were a few times during those hard weeks that I wished something would just show up and solve my problems. I was frustrated, tired and my path seemed impossible. But I'm glad I kept moving forward—despite the many giant steps back and stupid detours—because now I can own every step forward, every right decision, and the victory, finally, at last, is mine. And God's because there's no way I could have survived without Him!
